The North Yorkshire Art Scene

Anita Wallis

I am born ‘n’ bred in Yorkshire, with a keen interest in anything covered in fur or feathers. Originally from Leeds I went on to study at Lancaster University gaining a BA (hons) Degree in Scientific and Natural History Illustration. I have returned back to my grass roots living in the picturesque countryside on the outskirts of Masham.

I work predominantly in acrylic, but occasionally like to delve into less familiar mediums and surfaces. I initially painted on Arches smooth watercolour paper as was the norm at university inorder to capture the immense detail that was required, but quickly moved on to canvas. What I loved about canvas was its robust nature, the new found tools and techniques that were now at my disposal, diverted me away from the tight intricacies of my training and led me to incorporate multiple styles within a single painting.

I now prefer to palette knife my backgrounds or use zoning techniques, saving the details for the main focus of my work, I have more recently utilised the margins of the canvas as part of the painting to a subtle degree, hoping to create a 3D illusion that makes viewers question what they see and how they perceive things.

I always found Esher and Dali fascinating when I was growing up, to me their work really made you stop and think, and that is something I've always wanted to aim for. A ‘pretty picture’ has never been enough for me and having also studied psychology, I do love a title to have a double meaning or play on words.
