The Kent Art Scene

Julia Stockwell-Hamid

I am a fine artist painting large scale textured canvases using mostly oil and acrylic and more recently incorporating real silver into my work and a silversmith designing and hand-crafting unique and unusual pieces of jewellery.

I have always worked in the creative industries, originally trained as a dancer and choreographer, appearing on shows such as Top of The Pops, films such as Monty Pythons 'Meaning of Life' and acting alongside Hugh Grant.

Never one to settle I moved to the Sudan and it was in Africa that my passion for fine art was re-ignited and on my return to the UK I made the transition to full time artist selling my work through galleries and South East Open Studios.

My paintings of vessels are influenced by my time living in Africa - relating to a Sudanese custom of welcoming strangers - large water containers 'ziirs' are left outside houses; filled with water for passing strangers to quench their thirst.  The compassion struck me and I fell in love with this idea of sharing. 'It's wonderful to be able to offer comfort to others and to experience the kindness of people in a place where you are just a visitor'.

More recently I returned to Africa staying two years in Tanzania, there I was asked to be on the committee of the East Africa Art Biennale.

I have exhibited widely most notably in the UK, Tanzania, Kenya, Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda.
