Steve Miles lives and works on the Isle of Wight. Originally trained as a graphic designer, he has built a highly successful career as a video and computer‑game designer. Alongside this, he has always pursued his lifelong passion for painting — creating exuberant, colourful and intricately layered large‑scale graffiti works inspired by his love of letterforms and hip‑hop culture.
Recently, Steve has shifted from painting vast exterior walls to working on canvas and paper for gallery settings:
“With an awareness that I needed to free myself from what I knew, and train myself to look and paint in a different, more fluid and abstract way. I began to experiment by moving my hand and creating the same movements and gestures that I would normally use when painting a large piece of graffiti. Without consciously drawing any letter, or outline for a letter, I was able to create, generate and capture the same emotions and movement as in my graffiti style.”
Steve recently contacted Coastal Gallery, and we are thrilled to feature three of his latest unframed canvases alongside a selection of framed works on paper. His work is an exciting and dynamic addition to the Coastal Gallery collection.
