This will be the first major UK exhibition of Malgorzata Mirga-Tas. Born in Zakopane in Poland, Mirga-Tas grew up in a Romani community in Czarna Góra, at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, where she continues to live and work today.
The artist is best known for her textile collages created with materials and fabrics that are mainly gathered from family and friends. Her visual storytelling comes from a feminist perspective and challenges stereotypical representations of Roma people. The exhibition will feature a range of colourful large-scale collages, including several new textiles, and three works recently acquired by Tate, the first by a Romani artist to join the collection.
Also launching simultaneously is Turkish artist Cansu Çakar’s brand new miniaturist-inspired painting installation for Tate St Ives’ rotunda staircase. Based in İzmir, Turkey, Cansu Çakar developed this new work during two residencies in St Ives in 2024, reflecting on commodities and mythologies bridging the Mediterranean and Cornwall.
